Know Your Body Shape - Apple and Pear

Good morning! Today I have the next instalment of the Know Your Body Shape Series. Today we are looking at how to dress for Apple and Pear Shaped Figures. If you don't know what body shape you have yet then don't forget to check out this post to find out.

So you think you have an Apple Shape Figure...

Do you:

  • Have rounded shoulders? 
  • Have fullness in the tummy area? 
  • Feel uncomfortable when tops are tucked in?

If you can say yes to these then you are an Apple Shaped Figure


  • Keep the clothing line straight to slightly fitted
  • The shoulders need attention so you should balance them from the front and side views
  • Go for monochromatic looks.
  • Go for v-neck tops to create the illusion of a longer torso.
  • Wear belts at the smallest part of your waist.
  • Conceal tummy bulge by wearing empire tops and dresses.
  • Wear boot cut and flared jeans to create an even line from the shoulders down.
  • Sleeves which finish next to your bust 
  • Skirt above knee length 
  • Clothing that finishes at your fullest points e.g. jackets, cardigans 
  • Excessive fabric in the mid section Gathered or tiered skirts 
  • Clutch bags or shoulder bags 
  • Petite shoes, kitten heels, boots with buckles, Uggs boots

So you think you have a Pear Shape Figure...

Do you:

  • Carry weight on your hips or thighs?
  • Have narrower shoulders than hips?
  • Have a clearly defined waist?
  • Wear a larger size on your bottom half than your top?
If you can say yes to these then you have a Pear Shaped Figure.


  • Balance the top with your fuller bottom half. Layering on your top half creates visual interest and draws the eye upwards. 
  • Wear fitted styles around your waist and always accentuate your waistline
  • Make your shoulders look broader 
  • Try a-line skirts, which camouflage wider hips.
  • Keep hems of pants, skirts and dresses wide to balance the hips.
  • Experiment with light-coloured tops and dark-coloured bottoms for contrast.
  • Look for boat neck tops, square and cowl necklines.
  • Try styles with ruffles on top.
  • Wear jackets that hit right above the waist.
  • Opt for pointy-toed shoes to elongate your legs.
  • Narrowing leg, pleats or creases in your leg line, pinstripe suits, turn-ups in your trousers, wide or flared leg lines.
  • Details, patterns, pockets on your thigh and hip area and belts on your hips
  • Flared or ruffled sleeve lines, straight skirts or pencil skirts
  • Bags that sit on your hips
  • Ankle straps, kitten heels, delicate footwear, round toe shoes, ankle boots with straps around your calf area, Uggs
  • Mini skirts or any other hemline that finishes on your hips, thighs or any other full point of your leg
  • Dropped waistlines
